PROFESSOR Y.T. THATHACHARI

PRESTIGIOUS RESEARCH AWARD FOR SCIENCE

Prof. Y.T. Thathachari in whose honour this award is instituted was an eminent scientist who did pioneering research in many new areas of science. He did his graduate studies at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and later was on the research faculties of the University of Madras, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, Mass., U.S.A.), Stanford University (Stanford, Calif., U.S.A.), and the University of California Medical centre (San Francisco, Calif., U.S.A.). He was a visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. His research contributions were in crystallography, X-ray diffraction, Electron Microscopy, and XAFS studies of materials and biological molecules, Kirlian photography, new imaging techniques, medical information science, and studies on language and information.

This brilliant scientist who conquered cancer and lived for over thirty years passed away on 23rd November 1993. In January 2000 the board of trustees of the Bhramara Trust of Y.T. and Madhuri Thathachari unanimously decided to institute the Prof. Y.T.Thathachari Prestigious Research Award to encourage pioneering research in new areas of science.


"The above award for the year 2012 would be for outstanding research in the areas of Physical/Chemical/Mathematical Sciences".

 

The Award :  One Lakh of Rupees to be utilised only for Promoting Science.

Eligibility :

  1. The nominee should be a resident Indian national.
  2. The research work should have been carried out in India.

Age :  At the time of nomination the nominee must have three years of service before retirement.

Non-Eligibility :  A Scientist who has won a comparable National Award earlier will not be eligible for this award.

Terms and Conditions :

 

  1. The Prof. Y. T. Thathachari Prestigious Research Award for Science will be given once in two years. The award will be given alternately for Physical or Chemical or Mathematical sciences in the first year and Biological or Medical sciences in the third year.
  2. At the time of nomination the awardee must have at least three more years of service before retirement so that the award money can be utilised for promoting Science.
  3. Nomination/application forms should be filled in triplicate . Three copies each of the reprints of the five best publications of the applicant should be enclosed
  4. The candidate should give names of scientists in India who have done work in the same area.
  5. The candidate should request two referees who are conversant with his/her work to send the referee reports directly to Bhramara Trust on the forms provided.
  6. The Head of the Institution in which the candidate is working should forward the application certifying that the candidate has three more years of service before retirement.
  7. The last date for receipt of nomination/ application will be October 15, 2012.
  8. The last date for receipt of referee reports will be October 15, 2012.
  9. If the application is deficient in any respect, it will be rejected.
  10. The decision of the scrutiny committee will be final.
  11. This is a prestigious award and the selection criteria will be rigorous and a panel of experts will make the recommendation. The Board of Trustees will have to approve the recommendation and the Board's decision will be final. If more than one candidate is selected, the award money will be shared by the candidates.
  12. The winner/s of the award will be notified by Bhramara Trust. The award (memento, citation and the cheque) will be presented at a function.
